I just listened to part of the lecture i gave last week on soldiers in war, horrifying. There is a man who works in metrotickets on king william who has a woman's voice. I kept thinking this woman was yelling things out, but her lips weren't moving, then i realised it was the man. It was pretty intense. ok ( here ) Current Music: HIST2051:War and Society | | Sunday, October 22nd, 2006 | | 12:35 pm |
Melbourne.

I really don't know why i don't go into magill big star everyday, considering it is about 5 doors down from my house. I realised this when Danny told me he found TWO Yoko Ono records there for $2 each, although one was Double Fantasy which you can find anywhere. So i went today and found the Pel Mel 12" single of pandemonium today for $2! Amazing. AMAZING EDIT: I just got a phone call telling me that I got the UniSA job. Money for ARGENTINA. News: Melbourne next weekend, Uni is paying for me to go to Canberra at the end of November for an 'emergency' research trip, some of my students are driving me insane, i have a job interview tomorrow for uni sa exam invigilating - 16 days in November - to save more money for Argentina. There are more things happening, partying etc, i have photos but zero time to put them up coz i've been writing lectures and gotta do them before Melbourne. STRESSSSSS. I want to go to Sydney at some point soon too, maybe in December, early January? I'll see how it goes. I'm excited about seeing Crayon Fields this Saturday! And the launch. Will try to do both. LIFE.
I don't know whether loads of different things are happening, or maybe the same old things are happening and i'm seeing them differently or how I used to see them. Anywayyyyy its good and i've been having fun ALTHOUGH this trip to Melbourne is TOTALLY in the middle of my most intensive tutoring/lecturing period at uni. Ah well. I am definitely going over to Melbourne now, was going to buy plane tickets but mentioned it to sarah and jamie and brett on thurs night and they have all decided to come too so we're all driving over in Sarah's car. Amazing. So - major events - fighting with people at Myer over issues of morality and them not understanding, messaging a friend about a boy I have a faux-crush on (its just something I do) and actually sending the message to the boy (i gasped out loud on the bus), random opshopping and AMAZING finds (ie calico-style frill shirt with puffy sleeves that caused two fashion gays to accost me in Supermild on Thursday night insisting I looked 'SO Louis Vuitton' (???) and asking if they could take a load of pictures of me. I wish I had gotten pictures on my camera of them. They were AMAZING/HILARIOUS), telling the head of the history department that he had had a few too many and needed to go home at the launch party of the journal I got published in, going back to St Luke's op shop and having ANOTHER weird experience with the man/woman there (ie her telling me the entire details of how much she hates her boss for what felt like half an hour), not studying enough etc. Oh! and going to see amazing Berlin-based noise guys the same girl at Leni and Fjorn's art space. OK random photos and some from Thurs night ( here ) Current Mood: tired, content, comfortable.Current Music: documentary about goya | | Tuesday, September 19th, 2006 | | 4:58 pm |
travels, travels maybe
Thinking about going to Melbourne for Dermo's birthday next month. Just about to go to a Pioneer product night at the wine centre - free wine. Borrowed a dream collection of french new wave films today from the Flinders library. Obsessed with 'Spoon' by Can and 'I Don't Know Why' by Yoko Ono. Weird, I've known them for ages but they've suddenly gripped me for some reason. That's all. | | Sunday, September 17th, 2006 | | 7:26 pm |
stuff, photos, rambling
I was on my way to work today after three and a half hours of sleep and an enormous hangover, and I walked past this weird kids amusement/indoor playground thing at Tea Tree Plaza. Parents sit there so they can have a moment's peace (ie the kids are playing) while they're drinking coffee. It really is a horrendous place. ANYWAY i watched these two kids who had just been let loose on the area and they were running from amusement to amusement, sizing it up. And i got this weird memory of doing the same myself. After I had grown up a bit and playgrounds had stopped completely overwhelming me, I'd totally walk up to the different 'amusements' and size them up, deciding which one I was going to play with first. To the point where these amusements turned into more of a commodity than fun. I guess that's when I outgrew them. Does that make any sense? It was a funny memory anyway... Anywayyyyy nothing else to say, except I am obsessed with Australian Idol at the moment, and my inventing a game counting hotties that walk into Myer have made days go past faster (it is a challenge because I work at Tea Tree Plaza and everyone is ugly around there - it has spread across the fourth floor ie I will walk past a random I've never met who works at Myer and they will go 'Effie I have TWO!!' Amazing), also trying to avoid the Persian guy who keeps asking me to have sex with him is making days go past faster. Horrifying. OK last night was Hit the Jackpot/Crayon Fields launches, plus Guy Blackman. SO amazing. Guy writes such sweet songs, I think it is impossible not to like his songs, and Hit the Jackpot keep getting more amazing every time I watch them, and I had never seen Crayon Fields before, and I really did love them so so much. OK so it was a huge-ish night, I love cheeky rose SO much. Photos ( here )ps. i watched 'Grown Ups' by Mike Leigh the other day for the first time and now I am even MORE obsessed with brenda blethyn. She is SO amazing. Current Mood: muttoCurrent Music: mutto | | Friday, September 8th, 2006 | | 12:25 pm |
old men.
On Wednesday, Celia and I went north-side op shopping. At that Red Cross on North East Road, other than the fact that I found amazing retsina glasses, there were wayyyyyy too many volunteers hanging around and most of them had nothing to do. Despite this, they gave the job of labelling various items with the ever-dangerous KIMBLE GUN to a woman with one limp arm. Seriously, she served me and one arm was COMPLETELY useless. Anyway, at one point I was looking at the books and an old man who clearly had nothing to do but was volunteering started explaining to me that the books I was looking at were 'very old' (blatantly obvious) and I just sort of nodded and kept looking. Then he asked me what I was looking for and I said 'military history' (shut up, I have found out-of-print amazing history books in op shops) and he started looking for me. At the same time, 'Right Here Waiting' by Richard Marx was playing in the background, and the spanish-style instrumental part had started. The old guy looks at me and goes 'oh i love this guitar work' and I said 'yeah this is a really good song' and he (a little more passionately) says again 'oh i just love the guitar work'. Then he ran off to find me military books in their 'reserve', and came back with garden books plus one book on Gallipoli. I was almost in fits of laughter at the time. Weirdest op shop EVER. oh and ps. last night i went out for a little while despite the fact that I am sick and got a guy kicked out of supermild for generally harassing us all and mainly for yelling out 'whooooooa' while aimee was pulling out her wedgie. At one point I was sitting and this guy was sitting on one side trying to 'get it onnnnnn' and yama had to pretend to be my bf. Oh!! And at one point the guy thought Tim was a girl, so Tim went and sat next to him and the guy put his arm around him and said 'What's your name?' and Tim goes 'Tim' and the guy goes 'How do you spell that?' and Tim goes 'T-I-M' and the guy goes 'I want a woman!' AMAZING. I really don't deal well with sitting at home sick. Current Mood: SICKCurrent Music: evol | | Wednesday, September 6th, 2006 | | 1:16 pm |
italo-rage
I've moved to Norwood. I never realised what a Little Italy it was until I went grocery shopping today (and btw found a FOODLAND) and on my way stopped in the bank. As I was walking in this old Italian guy (Santo) with a walker shuffled past me and just waited at the counter even though there were about five people waiting. An Italian woman was at the front of the line and started yelling at him in Italian because he was pushing in, then the teller started yelling 'Santo!' and other random Italian words so he would go to the back of the line. So he just stood at the counter until the Italian woman had finished, then shuffled into the next spot. Oh, there were some angry Italian faces in the bank. I fucking love Norwood. btw...
I am currently obsessed with Argentina. I am saving to go there next year with my friend Mauro - Oct/Nov. Free accommodation and cheap livin'. And i'll probs go to Brazil/Paraguay too, since Mauro's family owns a timeshare place on the joint border of the three countries. Hello Rio de Janeiro... | | 2:28 pm |
everyone has to watch this -
Tonight on SBS is a documentary about the 2001 Argentinian economic disaster and how now there is a worker's revolution going on in not only Argentina, but also other places in South America, in which workers are taking over abandoned factories etc formerly owned by middle class Argentinians who were driven out because of the economic collapse and taking them over themselves. Much like the collectivisation of farms during the Spanish Civil War, but more industrialised (ie 21st century vs. 1930s). AMAZING. 10pm. I owe my life to bile beans
I am currently in the State Library looking at 1899-1902 newspapers on microfilm. I just got some old guy to get out of this seat so I could sit here and plug my laptop in, and I'm paranoid he's watching me so I gotta hide the fact I am on lj. Life = study, work, my article comes back from the printer I think in 2 weeks. LAUNCH PARTY. Other than that, getting constant crushes on the over-40 set. OKKKK these are random party pictures from nights other than the night of Stuart's birthday party/housewarming. SOFA BED.
Does anyone need a couch?? I have a sofa bed at my house, its pretty old but comfortable. Colours are fading, but if you put a sheet/cover on it, it looks fine. I am moving out next Wed, so tell me before then. Current Mood: uniCurrent Music: uni | | 1:05 pm |
piano piano piano
So i just got a phone call from my uncle saying that the piano I first learnt to play on, this amazing old 120 or so year old (well we got it tuned about 20 years ago and the tuner said that it hadn't been tuned for about a hundred years) piano that I thought my parents had sold and was so upset about, is very soon going to be moved into the house that I'm moving into next week. AMAZING. Current Mood: kinda happy?Current Music: office | | Sunday, August 6th, 2006 | | 9:24 pm |
bugs bunny
I just remembered I used to know this nutjob kid called David who, while watching the bugs bunny show, would turn the show off after he saw the 'That's all folks' bit, not realising that half the cartoons ended with that. Also not realising that the show went for half an hour, not 5 or 10 minutes. I have no idea what made me think of that, but seriously - what a fucking idiot. OK so the past week my sister has been in Adelaide, I have been drinking almost every night. Friday night was the drunkest I've been in about 3 years. Never again. I've decided to become a hermit for a while as a result. Oh, except for this Thursday - Rins and I are djing at Supermild. Midnight to close. I think Louis is djing 10-12. ok so i came back from Canberra/Sydney on Sat night and got sorta drunk/delirious on the plane and the 16 year old girl sitting next to me said she knew me from somewhere and asked if I worked in the city. I said no, then she said 'so do you go to Shotz?' coz Chris Pike is her uncle and she always goes there. That was a depressing moment. But I got back to Adelaide, went straight home and continued DRINKING for Bridie's bday. And Ellen is back! OK can't be bothered writing more, ( here ) Current Mood: happpppyCurrent Music: marine girls | | Monday, July 3rd, 2006 | | 8:16 pm |
PHOTOS etc.
I only started getting excited today about my trip to Sydney and Canberra. Of course I've been excited about studying at the war memorial for weeks, but I just remembered how good Sydney is and now I'm soooooo excited. Loads of things have happened, I've been having a load of fun, if you ignore cleaning for the inspection which included my having to PLANT PLANTS that had died. I seriously have no fucking idea. Bridie and I giggling in my room while the semi-hot carpet cleaner was at work was ok though. Hilarious. Oh! Last week Aimee, Joel, Jock, Bridie, Tim and I went to the only all you can eat Pizza Hut in Adelaide. Tim and I took lunchboxes in and I took SOOOO much pizza home. Oh, this leads to the Sweet Raxxx show at Downtown Gallery and Aimee getting her name put in the little black book at Supermild. We bought goon during the day, then met up at the show and started drinking, realised we were going to run out of goon (5L) (this was only Aimee, Jock and I really drinking it, and both of the Tims having bits), so we decided to buy more. Aimee fell over outside Tattersalls and almost killed herself, I could barely walk straight, we went to Supermild where they were having a 'French' special which involved about 1/8 actual French or even French-themed songs, including Stereolab played about 15 times which just got tiresome. OK I'm blabbering. ( Photos ) Current Mood: full of lentil pasta sauceCurrent Music: obsessed with the marine girls again | | Monday, June 12th, 2006 | | 7:00 am |
